By all accounts, Moldova is one of the poorest countries of Europe . Like in many other transitional countries, poverty and inequality have risen substantially during the last decade. It is also true that poverty and misrule have driven so many citizens out of the country that their payoffs sent back home to their families and relatives have created a false illusion of prosperity. Shadow economy and emigration are actual problems that threaten not only the future but also the present sustainability of the social protection system of the country.
